Tuina Anmo

Tuina Anmo often abreviated as Tuina is one of the 5 therapeutic branches from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).   The other 4 branches are acupuncture, herbal medicine, Qi Gong / Taijiquan aka "Tai Chi", and  5 Elements nutrition.

Please check this page for detailed information regarding a Tuina session.

Tuina comprises a set of hands-on techniques for working on the patient's body:

"The practitioner may brush, knead, roll, press, and rub the areas between each of the joints, known as the eight gates, to attempt to open the body's defensive chi (Wei Qi) and get the energy moving in the meridians and the muscles. Techniques may be gentle or quite firm. The name comes from two of the actions: tui means "to push" and na means "to lift and squeeze." Other strokes include shaking and tapotement. The practitioner can then use range of motion, traction, with the stimulation of acupressure points." (Source: Wikipedia)

I use Tuina in the following settings:

  • in a standard set of moves for a particular part of the body (arms, legs, upper body, lower back)
  • as part of my acupuncture sessions to prepare for or enhance the impact of the needling

What differentiates Tuina from other massage, manual therapy concepts is, that the application and choice of techniques is based on the same diagnostic tools used for acupuncture.  Namely pulse, tongue, patient interview and check up for constitutional patterns (body shape and face).

'Standard' treatments are meant for persons afflicted with seasonal changes (f.e. summer to autumn), general feelings of stiffness, stress and exhaustion.

I offer 'standard' sets in Tuina:

  • to relieve stiff arms and hands
  • to improve the blood circulation and body temperature of feet & hands
  • to relieve stiff shoulders and necks
  • to let the body cope with the seasonal changes
  • to improve the digestive functions (stomach massage and acupressure)
